Summary of Reviews

We have read all expert and user reviews on the Yakima EXO DoubleUp. In summary, this is what cyclists think.

9 reasons to buy

  • A reviewer deems the base and rack combination durable after two years of “rough” use, and buyers say they’re well-built.
  • The EXO DoubleUp bike rack is part of the EXO modular system, which includes a range of other accessories that attach to the SwingBase hitch base.
  • Most experts and buyers find installation easy, but some say assembly and installation are challenging.
  • Because this rack secures bikes by the wheels, there is no contact with the frame.
  • The EXO SwingBase remains stable in the hitch receiver, according to owners.
  • Buyers say loading bikes is easy and they remain secure in transit.
  • The SwingBase's swing-away feature allows full access to the rear of most vehicles.
  • Testers praise the optional accessories, including a taillight/license-plate kit and a gear-storage box.
  • Yakima backs both the EXO DoubleUp and EXO SwingBase with lifetime warranties.

6 reasons not to buy

  • The EXO DoubleUp requires purchase of the SwingBase, to which it attaches. This combination is expensive compared to platform hitch racks that come as complete units.
  • The combined weight of the DoubleUp and SwingBase exceeds 105 pounds, making frequent removal and reinstallation inconvenient. Some owners say installing just the 68.5lb SwingBase requires two people.
  • The SwingBase's swing-out design makes it heavier on the passenger side of the vehicle. This complicates installation of the base and increases the potential for uneven loads.
  • To prevent bike-to-vehicle contact, some vehicles require a hitch extender, which reduces overall load capacity.
  • Front fenders must be removed to fit bikes on this rack.
  • The rack isn’t rated for use on RVs or off-road terrain.

Bottom line

Yakima’s EXO DoubleUp is a platform hitch rack for bikes. It’s part of a modular system that mounts on the required Yakima SwingBase. It fits up to 48” wheelbases, 4.8” tires, and 29” wheels. Weight limits per bike vary based on the configuration used. It only fits 2” Class 3 and Class 4 hitch receivers, and some vehicles need a hitch extension for clearance. Its sturdy build and swing-away design earn praise, but some find the “heavy” SwingBase tricky to assemble and install. Overall, reviewers deem the convenient and versatile Yakima EXO DoubleUp and SwingBase combo a worthy investment.

Double-Decker Hitch Rack Hauls It All: Yakima EXO Review

The EXO system isn’t perfect, but it’s user-friendly, easy to operate, and gives me space I’ve only dreamed of. And because it’s modular, I’ve added mounts as I need them and as the budget allows.
