Summary of Reviews

We have read all expert and user reviews on the State Bicycle Co. 4130 Trail. In summary, this is what cyclists think.

13 reasons to buy

  • The 4130 Trail comes as a frameset or a customizable build with options to upgrade the drivetrain, wheels, seatpost, and brakes.
  • The frame is compatible with SRAM UDH and mullet wheels.
  • Experts enjoy the bike’s playful yet predictable and confident nature, saying it holds its line well on rocky, root-strewn descents.
  • The 4130 Trail’s composure on technical climbs is a standout ride characteristic for reviewers.
  • One tester says the bike's lively, snappy handling makes it well-suited to tight, flowy trails, dirt jump parks, and pump tracks.
  • Testers find the 4130 Trail comfortable, highlighting the ride position and the fork's small-bump absorption.
  • Experts praise the traction and durability of the WTB Trailboss TCS 2.4” tires.
  • The rims and tires are tubeless-ready, and State includes tubeless valves.
  • The easy-to-service BSA threaded bottom bracket is superior to the press-fit BBs typically found at this price.
  • The RockShox Psylo Silver RC 130mm fork proves supportive and capable of handling big hits.
  • Experts enjoy the 4130 chromoly steel frame’s supple feel on the trail.
  • The microSHIFT XLE drivetrain’s chain retention impresses a tester; another praises the smooth shifting.
  • A tester of the PNW Range dropper upgrade calls it a “great, reliable” component.

9 reasons not to buy

  • The relatively upright riding position makes the front end hard to manage in very steep climbs, requiring testers to shift their weight forward a lot.
  • The Tektro HD-M275 hydraulic disc brakes are weak and susceptible to fade on longer descents, according to reviewers.
  • A tester complains of heavy chain slap from the microSHIFT XLE drivetrain, despite the derailleur having a clutch.
  • One reviewer has to tighten the rear wheel's spokes after every ride.
  • Reviewers complain that the grips move around on the bars.
  • At around 34lb, the 4130 Trail is heavy for a hardtail.
  • Two reviewers wish for a lower gear (32t chainring, 11-46t cassette) for the steepest climbs, but three others find the gearing adequate.
  • One reviewer finds the zero-rise handlebar and cheap grips make give the cockpit a chattery feel.
  • This bike requires more assembly than typical MTBs, such as installing the star nut and cranks.

Bottom line

State Bicycle Co.’s 4130 Trail is a hardtail mountain bike with a steel frame and 130mm fork. Buyers can choose between two drivetrains, wheelsets, seatposts, and brakesets. The stock bike is perfectly rideable, but all testers recommend adding the dropper. Reviewers mostly love the geometry, though the front end can loop out on very steep ramps. Brake fade and limited gearing are highlighted, among other minor gripes. Overall, experts agree State’s “seriously competent” 4130 Trail punches above its price point and makes a compelling option for beginners or those keen to rediscover the excitement of riding at the limit.

The State 4130 Trail Steel Hardtail MTB Can Be Whatever You Want It to Be

On the trail, the State 4130 hardtail feels pretty good. The fork isn’t overly supple or responsive off the top, though once you get into the middle of the stroke it’s very capable.
