Summary of Reviews
We have read all expert and user reviews on the Colnago World Cup. In summary, this is what cyclists think.
10 reasons to buy
- A long term owner praised the brakes, which worked well after 4500 miles of riding.
- The World Cup’s handling was lauded by more than one owner.
- Numerous reviews rated the World Cup’s price to performance ratio highly.
- The Shimano 105 gears shifted well.
- There was enough clearance on this bike for riding in mud and on gravel.
- The unique frame shape made it easy to carry in cyclocross competition.
- Some users said the frame was sturdy.
- Shimano’s 105 groupset gave good performance for the bike’s price.
- Double bottle mounts are included for longer rides.
- A few riders felt the World Cup was versatile enough to ride on asphalt, fire-roads and even singletrack.
7 reasons not to buy
- The achilles heel of this bike was a recurring frame failure, where the rear mech tore off with the hanger and part of the chainstay.
- Colnago brand wheels were heavy and sluggish.
- Some said that the Avid discs were a bit weak, needed constant adjusting and were worth replacing.
- Tires delivered a slow ride and were often swapped out.
- Most riders felt that this bike was excessively heavy.
- More than one buyer felt that the World Cup was poor value for the cost.
- Some users wanted a larger outside chainring.
Bottom line
The World Cup could be an impressive mid-range cyclocross bike with gravel aspirations. The Shimano 105 kit is more than adequate. Geometry is indicative of Colnago’s higher-end range. It even sports an innovative frame shape, in the form of a shouldering curve between the seat and top-tubes. What lets this bike down is the excessive weight and the recurring critical frame failure that the manufacturer apparently refuses to warranty. For one owner, the rear mech sheared off after 65 days use, while tearing out part of the frame. This happened to at least three other owners who gave 1-star reviews. Perhaps the World Cup is best as an all-winter, wet-weather on-road ‘training’ bike.Expert Reviews
