The Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini is widely considered to be the most secure portable bike lock available. Only the ABUS Granit series can give it a run for its money. With an 18 mm shackle, it must be cut twice – and only with an angle grinder. Expert lock-pickers did find flaws. However, folk like this are scarce, on the streets. Its small size limits frame and post-locking options, but does make it harder to lever open. It’s also fairly weighty. By itself, it best suits owners of bikes with narrow frames, rims and tires. But coupled with another U-lock or cable, its very hard to beat. Not a thrifty choice, for obvious reasons.

The stiffest, toughest lock we’ve ever put to the sword. It resisted our cutting tool (destroying a cutting disc in the process) and it took close to three minutes to sever it. The size is limiting. It’s expensive, too.

The most secure portable bike lock, period. This is indisputable! It’s the thickest. It’s (nearly) the heaviest. While it’s undoubtedly a fantastic bike lock, it’s certainly not for everyone. It’s not cheap.

Hydraulic Cutter EXPLODES vs. Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Lock

OK. That was a… shattered blade. The hydraulic cutter barely scratched the surface of the shackle. I think this lock has lived up to its excellent reputation. One of the blade pieces shot up and broke one of my fluorescent lights.

You can see it act as a double deadbolt. Both of them are locked. Even if someone’s actually cutting one side of it, it won’t spin.

If you get a grinder you have to cut both bars, because if you just cut one end it’s not going to let this loose, meaning you can’t swing this around like some other U-locks.

The new disc detainer tool FINALLY lets me pick this lock. The discs are buried deep inside the lock body but the new adjustable pick that LockPickingLawyer and I designed and made EASILY accesses it.

NYT Wirecutter Says These Are The Best Bike Locks

They concluded that these locks were secure against lock picking. It’s a strange conclusion. They have the single most common disc detainer keyway. This pick is $45. Bosnian Bill and I designed it – and it will pick these all day long.

Even with a powered cut-off wheel, our testers took over a minute to make the two cuts necessary to remove it. It uses a very secure disc-detainer mechanism. A YouTube expert, ‘LockPickingLawyer’, opened our upgrade pick in 58 seconds.

Hefty enough to stop all but the most determined thieves, it should offer plenty of protection for most bike commuters. The very sight of it should be enough to make crooks seek out a softer target. It’s pretty weighty.
