Summary of Reviews

We have read all expert and user reviews on the Marin Sausalito. In summary, this is what cyclists think.

24 reasons to buy

  • One rider reports 37mi of riding on the highest assist level, with battery to spare.
  • Shimano’s STEPS mid-drive motor provides natural assist, using a torque sensor.
  • At 40lb for a size small, the Sausalito E1 is light.
  • A very generous gear range is supplied by 11-51t (E2) and 11-46t (E1) cassettes.
  • Shimano (E2) and Tektro (E1) hydraulic discs are strong and reliable.
  • Both the E1 and E2 are specced with large 180mm disc brake rotors.
  • A Shimano BT6010 418Wh battery supplies at least 51 miles of range.
  • Due to tire choice, the E1 rides on gravel comfortably without suspension.
  • With a Shimano STEPS E6100 motor system, the E2 is seen as a good value.
  • 650b×47c WTB Horizon mixed-tread tires offer great comfort and grip in the wet.
  • The E2 is capable over a variety of surfaces, including pavement and gravel.
  • Handling is outstanding, largely thanks to wide, low-rise handlebars.
  • The E2 is available in 4 sizes, the E1 in 3. Both fit riders 5’2” to 6’4”.
  • On the E2, a Shimano STEPS E6100 motor supplies 60Nm of torque.
  • The E1’s frame and fork feature mountpoints for racks, cargo and fenders.
  • Both models are available in traditional and step-through frame options.
  • One tester found it easy enough to maintain a 15-20mph speed in Eco mode.

  • Reviewers and owners say the paintwork on these bikes is striking.
  • Sausalito models come with a kickstand and bell.
  • Owners say they are able to ride their Sausalito uphill, without the battery.
  • Reviewers say the Sausalito is simple and quick to assemble in around 40 minutes.
  • Owners say the Sausalito’s instructions are great.

3 reasons not to buy

  • With only 40Nm of torque, the E1 can struggle on steeper hills.
  • Sausalito models do not come equipped with any lights, fenders or a rack.
  • One reviewer says the E2’s Suntour NVX-E suspension fork bottoms out easily.

Bottom line

Marin bases their Class 1 Sausalito e-bikes on the classic daily-rider and mountain bike geometry that comprises the brand’s legacy. As a result, these bikes ride comfortably on a variety of surfaces. Both models are equipped with Shimano STEPS motors. The E2 is fitted with an E6100 system that pulls 60Nm of torque. The E1 uses a STEPS E5000 and achieves 40Nm, which means that some pedal-power is needed to conquer steeper hills. The E2 is fitted with a 63mm suspension fork. With a 44t chainring and 11-51t (E2) or 11-46t (E1) cassette, the gear range is wider than most of the competition. Marin has made sacrifices; excluding fenders, lights or a rack, but equipping these lightweight rigs with top-notch hydraulic brakes and big rotors. Reviewers see the Sausalito as a great value for a high-quality build at a below-average price.

Marin Sausalito E2

I was very impressed by this bike. The Shimano STEPS E6100 system that it’s built around is hard to beat and combining it with the Shimano Deore groupset means that it is reliable too.
