Summary of Reviews

We have read all expert and user reviews on the Denago eXC. In summary, this is what cyclists think.

11 reasons to buy

  • This bike comes in two builds: eXC1 and eXC2. Each is available in three sizes for riders from 5’5” to 6’5”.
  • Experts feel the Denago eXC2 provides “solid value” based on the price and spec.
  • Reviewers enjoy eXC2's “thrilling” hill-climbing performance, taking on steep hills “without breaking a sweat.”
  • The eXC1 performs "in line with" similar e-bikes in hill tests, while the eXC2 maintains higher-than-average speeds.
  • Testers highlight the eXC's “responsive” motor and “natural” power.
  • An expert praises the consistent increases in power and speed between pedal assist levels on the eXC2.
  • In PAS 1 range tests on paved surfaces, the eXC2 covers 64.5 miles and 1,700 feet of elevation, while the eXC1 manages 88.3 miles on a flat route.
  • The “solid” Tektro hydraulic disc brakes perform well in testing.
  • The bike's handling and stability impress. One expert lauds the “excellent” steering and ability to “carve” corners.
  • An expert enjoys the "comfort" and "good traction" of the eXC1's 2.4” Maxxis Ardent tires.
  • Reviewers appreciate the inclusion of a 150mm-travel dropper seatpost with the eXC2.

6 reasons not to buy

  • A tester complains that the motor pauses when shifting, which can feel “slightly jarring.”
  • The eXC doesn’t have bottle cage mounts.
  • One tester finds the eXC1's PAS indicator lights "difficult to see." This build lacks a display.
  • The speed differences between PAS levels on the eXC1 are inconsistent.
  • Testers report "significant chatter" from the drivetrain when riding over bumpy trails.
  • At around 57lb, the eXC is quite heavy for a hardtail e-MTB.

Bottom line

The Denago eXC is an entry-level hardtail e-MTB available in two builds. The “responsive” and “natural” power from the Bafang motors excites testers, especially on the eXC2, which makes light work of hills. Experts praise the riding range and performance on “smoother” singletrack and gravel, highlighting the stability, controlled handling, and effective brakes. However, buyers should temper expectations of the eXC's trail capabilities, as the Suntour XCM forks are decidedly basic. Complaints are minor, though reviews are few (and short-term). Overall, the Denago eXC is considered an “excellent starting point” for those considering an e-MTB.

Denago eXC1 and eXC2 Review and Comparison: Best Budget Electric Mountain Bikes?

Both bikes were nice, but the more powerful motor, significantly larger battery, dropper seat, boost front wheel, and nicer shifter make the eXC2 a more compelling pick for the more serious mountain biker.
