Summary of Reviews

We have read all expert and user reviews on the Mongoose Selous. In summary, this is what cyclists think.

8 reasons to buy

  • The Selous’s stiff build made for responsive acceleration.
  • A reviewer felt that the Selous’s price represented good value.
  • Modern front and rear thru-axles ensured stability and stiffness.
  • One reviewer said that the 2x11 drivetrain delivered plenty of range.
  • A tapered head-tube contributed stiffness to the Selous’s build.
  • Shimano 105 shifters did their job well.
  • An owner remarked on how good the Selous looked in orange-red.
  • WTB Nano 40c tires worked well on dirt and mud.

5 reasons not to buy

  • Even with a carbon fork and 40c tires, long-distance rides could be jarring.
  • Alex 700c Volar wheels were heavy and could fall out of true easily.
  • An expert described brake fade on fast descents as ‘scary’.
  • WTB Nano 40c tires were a bit too knobbly for smooth dirt or roads.
  • A 23.5lb weight seemed a bit on the heavy side, for one reviewer.

Bottom line

Mongoose is known as a budget brand but this isn’t a completely budget bike. The presence of a Shimano 105 rear derailleur and Shimano hydraulic brakes is testament to that. Many components, including FSA drivetrain parts and Alex wheels, are decently mid-range and do the job. The aluminum frame, tapered headset and thru-axles all added up to a fast, stiff ride that could be unforgiving on longer expeditions. Of most concern were the heavy wheels that seemed prone to coming out of true. Not a bad basis for entry-level gravel, at this price – and imminently upgradeable.

Mongoose Selous Expert Review

Mongoose’s Selous provides a lot of ride at a reasonable price… you do feel a bit more fatigued on an especially long ride… Front and rear through axles and a tapered head tube provide for outstanding carving… some scary brake fade on the most treacherous pitches.

Mongoose Selous Expert Gravel Bike Two Thousand Mile Review

A little over 4 years and two thousand miles later, I started to replace things… the wheels are really good. I think I had to true them only once… The WTB Nano 40c tires held up very good… the grip was good… It is on the heavier side… disc brakes are good… I really had no problem with this bike… minimal maintenance.
