5 reasons not to buy

  • Some buyers felt that packaging was sparse, resulting in gouging and scratching.
  • A few buyers felt the Superbe’s geometry was excessively upright and cramped.
  • Owners reported that instructions were generic and therefore not easy to follow.
  • Sometimes, small parts such as bolts were missing.
  • Tales of damage marred the Superbe’s retro delight. This included bent fenders, scratches, a ripped grip, a bent derailleur and a hole in the basket.

Bottom line

The ‘Superbe’ moniker has been in use by Raleigh since at least 1900. In its most recent iteration, it harks back to earlier days of cycling yore by employing classic, upright geometry and a leather saddle. Finishing touches include a detachable wicker basket, pleather grips, a steel chainguard and a die-cut chainring that features the Raleigh crane logo. Reports of ride-quality, braking and gear-shifting were overwhelmingly positive. All that let the Superbe down were recurring reports of damage, including frequently bent fenders. But this may be on the carrier, rather than the manufacturer.
