More Bicycle Commuters in Massachusetts

The Boston Herald reports Cycling surges in Mass., fueled by high gas prices. Are gas prices providing extra motivation to drive less and make more trips by bike? A lot of recreational and club cyclists like to put their bike on the car rack and drive to the meeting place a group ride, or to an area where roads are more bike friendly. I know at least one person I talked to recently said they were doing more rides starting from home instead of driving to group rides, and I’m sure the price of gas will turn some of the “fitness” cyclists into “transportation” cyclists.

Connecticut Bicyclists Want To Take The Train

The Hartford Courant recently ran an article about cyclists trying to gain access to commuter trains in order to be able to cycle the remaining distance to home or work on either end of their train ride. Many cities accommodate bicycles on trains including San Francisco, and Portland, Oregon. Currently the Metro-North train bans bicycles during peak commuter hours.

In the UK, where they allow folding bicycles on commuter trains there has been some backlash against cyclists from other train users.

Time To Start Bike Commuting More

Today I filled up my car at the gas station and it was the first time gas was over $4 per gallon for regular unleaded. You have to wonder at what point do people start thinking about riding bikes for short trips. I’ve read more new stories that it is making a difference.

I used to commute by bike a lot more when I worked 15 miles away from home. Now I work 1.5 miles away, but often have to drop a kid off at school, or pick the kids up from childcare on my way home. I’d be interested in getting a bike like a Surly Big Dummy. I would just need a bike that I could pick up an 8 and 10 year old on. A lot of it just comes down to planning ahead and riding the days when I don’t have to use my car.
