Columbia Sportswear To Sponsor High Road

Portland, Oregon based Columbia Sportswear will become the new title sponsor of the American based Team High Road, and they will unveil new team uniforms in time for the Tour de France. Here is the press release from Columbia Sportswear:

GENEVA, Switzerland and SAN LUIS OBISPO, California – June 16, 2008 – Columbia Sportswear Company (Nasdaq: COLM), a global leader in the active outdoor apparel and footwear industries, and California-based High Road Sports, Inc., the owner of Team High Road, today announced a new team sponsorship agreement that prominently places the Columbia brand at the starting line of the 2008 Tour de France on July 5.

Team High Road, one of professional cycling’s most successful young teams with star riders such as George Hincapie, Kim Kirchen and Mark Cavendish, will compete as “Team Columbia” for the remainder of the 2008 season and will unveil its new uniforms in Brest, France on July 3, two days before the start of Europe’s largest sporting event, the 95th Tour de France. In Europe and around the world, the Tour de France international cycling event is considered comparable to the United States’ Super Bowl in terms of popularity among fans and media exposure.

“Columbia Sportswear Company’s sponsorship of Team Columbia provides an ideal opportunity to elevate the positioning of Columbia in multiple European markets by communicating our authentic, outdoor, active, American brand to our target demographic,” said Tim Boyle, president and chief executive officer of Columbia Sportswear Company. “By sponsoring one of the top men’s and women’s cycling teams in the world, we leverage the international popularity and broad media reach of the cycling sport among enthusiast and recreational audiences, promote Columbia’s outdoor brand leadership in Europe and the U.S., and support our seasonal product initiatives, such as Omni-Shade™ apparel and accessories for sun protection.”

The three-year sponsorship agreement runs through 2010 and includes both the men’s and women’s professional cycling teams, which are top ranked worldwide and have won over 70 races combined in 2008 – the most wins of any competing team. In addition, at least 15 riders from Team Columbia are expected to represent their countries in the upcoming Olympics.

“This is a partnership with great potential,” says High Road Owner Bob Stapleton. “Columbia is a market leader with innovative products, progressive management, and ambitious marketing objectives. We welcome Columbia Sportswear as a key partner for the next several years,” Stapleton added.

This is a good sign for the future of the American based team, and it seems like a good fit. It will be interesting to see what the new team kit looks like, and how this sponsorship will influence product offerings from Columbia. Columbia does make a line of bicycles.

Columbia Cruisers

The team will probably still be riding Giant bicycles for the Tour, but maybe the riders can score a free cruiser as part of sponsorship deal!

Tour of California Partners With Tour de France

According to USA Today and VeloNews, the Amgen Tour of California will join forces with the organizers of the Tour de France.

According to a draft press release obtained by USA TODAY, the agreement begins with the upcoming 2008 Tour de France and 2009 Amgen Tour of California and calls for “the organizations to develop and initiate comprehensive cross promotional platforms for the world’s most prestigious cycling event and America’s most successful cycling race as well as provide assistance with media and sponsorship sales for the races in their respective regions.

This comes on the heels of news that ASO (the organizers of the Tour de France) was set to purchase 49 percent of the Vuelta.

The deal with the Tour of California looks to be mainly a TV distribution deal as the Tour de France has experience producing broadcasts for many countries and the Tour of California would like to grow their world wide audience.

As long as the deal is about TV distribution it is probably a good thing, but I don’t know if it is such a good idea to be taking public relations tips from the Tour de France. The Tour has been getting a lot of headlines, but it isn’t alway the good kind.

Versus Extends Tour de France Deal Throught 2013

The Versus TV network has signed a new deal with ASO (the organizers of the Tour de France) that will extend their rights for exclusive U.S. broadcast of the Tour through 2013.

Marketwatch says the investment in cycling is risky because of doping issues and the lack of a major star like the retired 7-time champion Lance Armstrong.

I don’t know if a perceived problem with doping will hurt ratings. Baseball seems to be doing just fine! If anything is going to keep fans from tuning in, it is more likely to be the organizers doing things like not inviting the defending Tour de France champion to the race. If fans feel like they are not seeing the best field possible, they might decide to spend time in the saddle riding their bikes during July instead of sitting on the couch watching the Tour.

In the end, the Tour de France is a great event and interest in cycling in the U.S. seems to be growing as well. Despite the best efforts of the race organizers and the UCI to damage the sport, I’m sure I’ll still tune in.

Tour de France Bans Astana

Today the organizers of the Tour de France (ASO) announced that they are banning Team Astana because if the doping issues in 2007 Tour de France. Any true cycling fan can what the truth is behind this decision. ASO has been in a power struggle with the UCI over who controls pro cycling. Astana is now being used as a pawn in this petty game that the ASO and UCI are playing. The ASO is basically shoving this decision in the face of the UCI saying “you can’t tell us who to invite to our race, and we’ll show you by leaving out the best team and last year’s winner.”

The Tour de France organizers are only doing more harm to their race and making a mockery of the sport. It is the fans, the riders, and the sport that suffers because of this.

At least we have the Tour of California to look forward too.

Tour de France threatens to ban ProTour teams

The fued between the UCI and ASO (organizers of Paris-Nice and the Tour de France) has reached a boiling point. The organizers of Paris-Nice have turned the race into a “national” event in defiance of the UCI, so the UCI has told all ProTour teams not to race. Now the ASO is telling teams they must race Paris-Nice, or forget about racing in the Tour de France.

“If these teams refuse to come to Paris-Nice, then they will have taken the same stance on our other races,” ASO chief Patrice Clerc told a Belgian newspaper. “If that’s the case, I don’t see why we should invite them to the Tour de France. I will only reconsider this if they have a very good reason to skip Paris-Nice.”

I guess by turning the Tour de France into an all French amateur event, they could ensure that one of their own win the race, but this would virtually kill the sport. Sponsors who are paying millions of dollars are counting on the media exposure from the Tour de France.

The ProTour team managers will meet Friday to decide what to do.

The leadership in the sport of cycling is in need of a major overhaul. How much bad press can this sport take? The goals of the UCI and and the Grand Tours are really polar oposites. ASO owns the most influential race in the world and they want to keep it that way, and keep the financial rewards that come with that.

The UCI wants to grow the sport globally and build up the importance of races other than the Tour de France. I think the UCI ProTour is what cycling needs to grow into a globally popular sport that the mainstream sports media outside of Europe cares about.
