Credit Agricole Team folding

One of the longest running professional cycling team organizations on the European pro peloton will end operations after it has failed to find a new sponsor to replace Credit Agricole which is ending it’s sponsorship of the team.

Roger Legeay has run this team’s organization for 22 years under former sponsors Peugeot, Z, and Gan. He won a Tour de France with Greg Lemond in 1990 with Team Z.

The demise of the team will no doubt lead to some speculation about where some of the Team riders may end up including Norway’s Thor Hushovd. Is there a chance he could end up with the American based Garmin Chipotle team? Jonathan Vaughters was a former rider with Credit Agricole has some connections there. Current Garmin-Chipotle rider Julian Dean is the former lead out man for Hushovd at Credit Agricole.

Another rider from Credit Agricole the Garmin team may be interested in picking up is Nicholas Roche, the son of former Tour de France winner Stephen Roche, and cousin of current Garmin team member Daniel Martin.

Credit Agricole is just one of several teams that are having trouble finding sponsors. The German based Gerolsteiner team is still looking for a replacement sponsor even after a very succesfull Tour de France.

According to a post on BikePortland.org, Levi Leipheimer and Chris Horner will be racing in the Cascade Classic form July 9-13 in Bend, Oregon. With Team Astana being left out of the Tour de France, they will be using Cascade to prepare for the Olympics.

In 1998 Lance Armstrong raced the Cascade Classic, then went on to win the Tour de France the next seven years, so maybe it will be good luck for Levi too!

Another top rider who will be at Cascade is Tom Danielson who was left off the Team Garmin / Chipotle roster for the Tour de France.

Columbia Sportswear To Sponsor High Road

Portland, Oregon based Columbia Sportswear will become the new title sponsor of the American based Team High Road, and they will unveil new team uniforms in time for the Tour de France. Here is the press release from Columbia Sportswear:

GENEVA, Switzerland and SAN LUIS OBISPO, California – June 16, 2008 – Columbia Sportswear Company (Nasdaq: COLM), a global leader in the active outdoor apparel and footwear industries, and California-based High Road Sports, Inc., the owner of Team High Road, today announced a new team sponsorship agreement that prominently places the Columbia brand at the starting line of the 2008 Tour de France on July 5.

Team High Road, one of professional cycling’s most successful young teams with star riders such as George Hincapie, Kim Kirchen and Mark Cavendish, will compete as “Team Columbia” for the remainder of the 2008 season and will unveil its new uniforms in Brest, France on July 3, two days before the start of Europe’s largest sporting event, the 95th Tour de France. In Europe and around the world, the Tour de France international cycling event is considered comparable to the United States’ Super Bowl in terms of popularity among fans and media exposure.

“Columbia Sportswear Company’s sponsorship of Team Columbia provides an ideal opportunity to elevate the positioning of Columbia in multiple European markets by communicating our authentic, outdoor, active, American brand to our target demographic,” said Tim Boyle, president and chief executive officer of Columbia Sportswear Company. “By sponsoring one of the top men’s and women’s cycling teams in the world, we leverage the international popularity and broad media reach of the cycling sport among enthusiast and recreational audiences, promote Columbia’s outdoor brand leadership in Europe and the U.S., and support our seasonal product initiatives, such as Omni-Shade™ apparel and accessories for sun protection.”

The three-year sponsorship agreement runs through 2010 and includes both the men’s and women’s professional cycling teams, which are top ranked worldwide and have won over 70 races combined in 2008 – the most wins of any competing team. In addition, at least 15 riders from Team Columbia are expected to represent their countries in the upcoming Olympics.

“This is a partnership with great potential,” says High Road Owner Bob Stapleton. “Columbia is a market leader with innovative products, progressive management, and ambitious marketing objectives. We welcome Columbia Sportswear as a key partner for the next several years,” Stapleton added.

This is a good sign for the future of the American based team, and it seems like a good fit. It will be interesting to see what the new team kit looks like, and how this sponsorship will influence product offerings from Columbia. Columbia does make a line of bicycles.

Columbia Cruisers

The team will probably still be riding Giant bicycles for the Tour, but maybe the riders can score a free cruiser as part of sponsorship deal!

Remembering Hampsten’s Giro Win

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Andy Hampsten’s win in the Giro d’Italia. His win was the first by an American in the Giro and remains the only win by an American to this day. There are points in your life when you say “I remember where I was when” a certain historical event takes place.

Andy HampstenI was 20-year-old cat 4 racer just starting a summer job at a bike shop. Every day at lunch I would walk across the street to the 7-Eleven and pick up a USA Today newspaper where they printed the stage results from the Giro to see if Hampsten was still in the pink jersey. How times have changed! Now you can watch live online video of the Giro and have access to instant stage results on CyclingNews.

There is no doubt that Andy Hampsten is one of my cycling heroes, and those great memories are partly why I am the cycling addict I am today. I was able to meet Hamsten a couple of times at the Seattle Bike Expo where he talked about some of the highlights in his career, and he signed an old issue of Winning Magazine where he was on the cover in his 7-Eleven kit.

Be sure to read the series from VeloNews on the anniversary of Hampsten’s historic win, and when it is available again, you can also buy the greatest cycling poster of all time.

The photo above is one I took of Andy Hampsten racing the Redmond, Washington in 1987.
