I took this picture this morning on my ride to work. After changing jobs last year, now I live less than 2 miles from my office. It is a flat route with a bike trail half the way along the scenic Farmington river. I put regular flat pedals on the bike, and I can just cruise down the bike path in my sandals and regular shorts and t-shirt (which I can wear at work) and not break a sweat. I just throw my laptop in my messenger bag, and I am all set.
I switched the wheel from fixed gear to freewheel so I can just coast half the way. If I want a workout I can just go for a ride when I get home on my road bike. There is really no reason not to ride to work for me, and I get to start the day feeling like I am on vacation just cruising down the trail on my bike.

Sweet! Commuting to work just makes sense when you live so close to the office.
jealous. I actually applied to a job recently solely because the office is off of the local bike trail. Of course, it is 20 miles up the bike trail, but it would be sooo worth it.
I am jealous also. I just started a new job in Tarrytown NY and it is only 14 mikes away. I really want to ride my bike to work, but I have to travel over the Tappan Zee bridge and there is no pedestrian lanes on the bridge! it is the perfect distance, I am so bummed!!!
It’s too bad there isn’t bike access to the bridge. Are there bike racks on buses that cross the bridge? That me be an option. I did a search and found that they are currently talking about refurbishing the Tappan Zee bridge. It will probably be a long time before it would make a difference to you, but if it is important I’d write the local governments that are making decisions about the bridge and request that any new bridge or refurbishing of the Tappan Zee bridge include pedestrian and bike access.
